The genetic fallacy evaluates a belief, practice, claim, or document solely by its origin rather than by its present reasons or evidence. Poisoning the well is a communicative tactic that makes a source or participant seem unworthy of a hearing.
The two overlap when an origin label is announced before a claim is considered: “That idea came from an advertising firm, so nothing in the report deserves attention.”
Claim History Is Not Claim Quality#
A mathematical proof does not become invalid because its author first noticed the pattern in a dream. A policy does not become effective because it came from a respected institute. Origins can explain why a belief arose without settling whether it is justified now.
Provenance matters differently for testimony, documents, artefacts, data lineage, and chain of custody. In those cases, origin is part of the evidence rather than a substitute for it.

Where the Fallacies Overlap#
The anonymous origin may justify authentication and caution. The genetic leap is that origin decides merit. The poisoned-well function is placing that origin first so the committee approaches the paper as beneath consideration.
A responsible chair would authenticate the paper, identify its claims, and apply the same evidential standards used for named submissions.
Before the committee reads the paper, remember that the idea started on an anonymous forum.
